This is the larva of a Tumbu Fly. This came out of someone’s back. He was new to the area and was complaining about a mosquito bite that was hurting. I pulled out our lonely planet guide to cameroon to find something exotic to make him scared. I started reading about the Tumbu fly and while he was freaking out, I began to freak out because as I looked at the bite and kept reading, I realized that he might actually have one of these in his skin. Sure enough, after smearing a little bit of burn gel on it (to suffocate it) it began to squirm and we all began to scream. Our malagasy companion bravely performed a surgery and pulled out the little maggot. It was like an episode of alien vs. predator.
This is Desirée’s mother. She was always super nice. We held a small church group in her house. One time, we showed up to set things up and everything was soaked in water. We asked her what happened and she said she had to douse everything to keep the fire leprechauns from burning the house down and that we were safe now. This story is not made up.
